  My thinking is you have autorun.inf worm.

  Try the following:

  1. disconnect your external hard drive
  2. save free flash disinfector to desktop:
  http://experi3nc3.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/flash-disinfector-by-subs/
  3. run free flash disinfector, when the program states connect USB this is when you connect your external hard drive

  You do know there is a very high possibility that is a virus?
  Sounds like Shuckbot to me. Could be anything but this almost seems like the description based upon your question:
  SHUCKBOT-A copies its file(s) to your hard disk. File name typical to SHUCKBOT-A is recycler.exe . Then it runs itself and creates new startup key in registry with name SHUCKBOT-A and value recycler.exe . If you will look into running processes list you will see some extra process with name like recycler.exe or any random name that uses decent amount of your CPU.

  Have you downloaded any malicious programs of the internet? When has this been happening.
  Problem solving:
  Use a legitimate removal tool.
  System restore.
