Well, the quick answer is recycling them in appropriate facilities than can accommodate all the different metals and plastics (both hazardous and not).

Another choice is to look to donate these devices to charities and companies that specialize in re-purposing old technologies. Remember, that in a modern industrialized nation technology changes fast and it is a commodity to us. But there are plenty of less advanced countries or countries that just don’t have the financial wherewithal to buy these technologies. Many of these companies send this older (to us that is) technology and reuse it in these places. To them it is a goldmine since they can’t afford it new.

If you Google the terms "technology repurposing third world" you should get a list of places you can do this at.

You should be recycling them appropriately or donating them to charity

you can recycle or donate them. just make sure that if you donate a computer, that you wipe the hard drive clean. you dont want any information being given away. there are people who take low paying jobs as garbage handlers just to take harddrives and extract information. many law enforcement agencies use old fashioned methods to prevent id theft. they use a drill or a sledgehammer on the hard drive. there are good disk wiping programs out there that you can download for free. Dont think that your info is not important. that also goes for your cell phone numbers.
I received a hard drive from someone and it had all that persons information about him. better be safe than sorry.
